Future Wild: Nature Restoration in Ireland

Book cover of Future Wild: Nature Restoration in Ireland by Richard Nairn

RELEASE DATE: OCTOBER 2024

Richard Nairn’s new book — Future Wild: Nature Restoration in Ireland — is a positive contribution to the debate about how to restore nature, how to ensure a more diverse landscape that will be better for wildlife and people.  Future Wild is by turns shocking and hopeful that the damage to nature can be undone, creating a richer environment for us all.

Ireland is one of the most highly modified countries in Europe and has little left of its original habitat.  Large numbers of species are under pressure due to intensive land uses such as farming and forestry and many are threatened with extinction. Marine resources have been overexploited and many fish populations decimated.  It is easy to be pessimistic about what appears to be an intractable situation.

However, there are optimistic signs that things are changing.  The European Union has proposed a new law on nature restoration which will set targets for all member states to achieve.  In Ireland, there are many places where nature restoration is already in progress and many of these projects are showcased in this book.  Given a little help from us, nature has an innate capacity to restore itself.
